Audio Calibration

Audio Calibration Equipment

You’ll want to invest in an audio calibration disc to test the performance of your home theater system. An audio calibration disc is a DVD disc with test patterns and diagnostics that help you optimize your system. Calibration discs included tests that can help you adjust your video monitor’s brightness, contrast, hue, tint, color, and flesh tone controls.

If you’re going to properly use an audio calibration disc, you’ll use a decibel meter with the audio test signals played from the calibration disc. Calibration discs also come with color strips. These are small strips of tinted plastic that help you in setting the color controls on your television monitor. These color strips are red, green, and blue. You look through the strip as the test pattern on your monitor is displayed. Then you just adjust the color and tint controls on your monitor to obtain the most accurate colors. It wouldn’t be a complete home theater audio calibration without test patterns to obtain the maximum sound.

Many different test patterns in audio calibration help identify problems with phase, location, and frequency response. The most important feature of calibration discs is the inclusion of test patterns that send a frequency to a single speaker, allowing you to measure and adjust the output level of that speaker. Although this asset might seem somewhat trivial, it is probably the most crucial home theater calibration.

When you evaluate and adjust the output level of each speaker, you are making sure that all your speakers produce the exact same volume level. There are several different calibration discs out there, and each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Sound Calibration Meter

The most commonly used calibration discs are Avia, Video Essentials, and Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune Up. Each guides you through tuning both your audio and video to help you obtain maximum results. Each disc also benefits from being used in conjunction with a decibel meter which obtains accurate readings on sound level output. Avia is widely regarded as the most thorough calibration disc. It provides a tremendous number of audio and video test patterns and is the favorite of hard-core home theater enthusiasts. That’s because Avia focuses more on audio than video. Video Essentials is another audio calibration disc. It features many audio and video test patters. Video Essentials focuses more on video and Avia focuses more on audio.
